What is it about 3D animation that appeals to so many people? For the viewer it is a chance to see something as yet unseen and only made possible through the beauty of both highly entertaining ideas teemed with outstanding technology. For those with a vested interest, it is about reward. The top 5 3D animated films of all times, is subjective, however, according to Digital Media FX as at May 2010, the top earning films are as follows:-
1. The Lion King - grossed over $312 million
This beautifully and at times, heartbreaking film traces the life of a cub from childhood to maturity. In exile, Simba is feted and raised by a host of very amusing characters, amongst them a warthog and his best friend, a meerkat. Simba eventually, though trials and tribulations, takes his rightful place as the Lion King, ruler of the land.
2. Shrek - grossed over $267 million
For those who have yet to see this epic film, the plot revolves around Shrek, a large green ogre and a loud and obnoxious donkey. Having to prove his worth to Lord Farquaad after having his swamp overrun by a variety of exiled fairytale characters, Shrek is sent on a mission to rescue Farquaad's future bride from a fire breathing dragon. The deal is that on successful completion of his quest, Shrek would have his swamp returned to him. But Fiona, the princess has a dark secret which complicates matters somewhat.
3. Monsters Inc - grossed over $255 million
A film where monsters are actually terrified of humans who believe they carry diseases. Set in the city of Monstropolis which runs on the screams of terrified children, Sulley and his sidekick, Cyclops take lead roles. Crossing the void between the two worlds, Sulley's job is to scare children and generate the screams that power the city's energy. When a 2 year old little girl accidentally follows Sulley back to his world, things get interesting. With the help of some very whacky characters, a devious plot is uncovered while Sulley tries to get the little girl home safe and sound.
4. Toy Story 2 - grossed over $245 million
Woody, the cowboy, owned by Andy is stolen one day while Andy is away at camp. Unbeknownst to both Woody and the greedy antique toy collector, a desperate rescue mission by Woody's closest toy friends is set in motion. The film revolved around pigs running amok, Hamm, Mr Potato Head Slinky Dog and Buzz causing mayhem while attempting to stop Woody being flown out to a toy museum in Japan. While in hostage, Woody is introduced to a group of other antique toy characters who introduce him to his past.
5. Aladdin - grossed over $217 million
When a street urchin named Aladdin and his donkey named Abu accidentally meet Princess Jasmine in the marketplace, Aladdin falls in love. Circumstances see Aladdin getting caught up in an evil plot to rule the land. With the hopeless quest of marrying the princess, who may only marry a prince, Aladdin sets off to retrieve the magic lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Trapped in the cave by the evil Jafar, Aladdin forms a relationship with the Genie of the lamp which eventually stands him on good stead in his quest to marry the Princess.
